How do you treat blue-green algae exposure?
Jul 01, 2024
It is critical to begin treatment as soon as possible after exposure. Sadly, there is no specific antidote for blue-green algae poisoning. Instead, treatment involves overnight hospitalization for intensive, supportive care.
Treatments may include:
- Decontamination in the form of bathing, inducing vomiting, and stomach pumping
- Cholestyramine – a medication to reduce the liver’s exposure to toxins
- Activated charcoal – absorbs toxins in the gastrointestinal tract to prevent further exposure
- IV fluids and electrolyte supplementation
- Supplemental glucose
- Plasma and/or blood transfusions
- Liver protectants
- Anti-seizure medications
- Muscle relaxants
- Oxygen supplementation
- Mechanical ventilation
