How do you treat blue-green algae exposure?

Jul 01, 2024

It is critical to begin treatment as soon as possible after exposure. Sadly, there is no specific antidote for blue-green algae poisoning. Instead, treatment involves overnight hospitalization for intensive, supportive care.

Treatments may include:

  • Decontamination in the form of bathing, inducing vomiting, and stomach pumping
  • Cholestyramine – a medication to reduce the liver’s exposure to toxins
  • Activated charcoal – absorbs toxins in the gastrointestinal tract to prevent further exposure
  • IV fluids and electrolyte supplementation
  • Supplemental glucose
  • Plasma and/or blood transfusions
  • Liver protectants
  • Anti-seizure medications
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Oxygen supplementation
  • Mechanical ventilation
